The Treasure of Contentment

In a peaceful village lived two friends, Kathir and Maran. Kathir was a simple farmer with a small patch of land and two healthy cows. Maran was the son of a wealthy landowner. One afternoon, Maran rode past Kathir on a shiny, brand-new bicycle. Watching him, Kathir felt a pang of sadness. 'Why don't we have something like that?' he thought. 'We are so poor and have nothing.' This thought began to cloud his happiness. His mother, Meenakshi, noticed his gloomy face. She sat him down and said gently, 'Kathir, look at the land that feeds us and the cows that care for us. When we look at what others have and feel lacking, we forget the richness of our own lives. Thinking we are destitute just to covet others' things is a trap for the mind.' Kathir sat quietly and thought about her words. Later that evening, as he fed his cows, he watched them grazing happily under the sunset. He realized that his small home was filled with peace and his heart with enough. Once he stopped comparing his life to Maran's, a great sense of calm washed over him. He realized he wasn't poor at all.
