In the peaceful kingdom of Nilagiri, lived a young king named Vikram. Vikram was kind-hearted, but he had a weakness: he often listened to the flattering words of his companions rather than the truth. Among his advisors was an elderly, wise man named Madhavan. Madhavan wasn't afraid to speak up, even when the King was wrong. One day, Vikram’s friends suggested that he should build a massive, golden monument just to show off his wealth to neighboring kingdoms. 'It will make you look powerful!' they whispered. As Vikram prepared to sign the order, Madhavan stepped forward. 'Your Majesty,' he said firmly, 'true power lies in the prosperity of your people, not in a pile of gold that drains our treasury. This monument serves no purpose but vanity.' Vikram paused. He looked at Madhavan’s honest eyes and realized the wisdom in the warning. He cancelled the project and invested the money in schools instead. Because Vikram had people like Madhavan to rebuke his mistakes, no enemy could ever truly undermine his leadership.
The Shield of Truth
The story illustrates that having companions who have the courage to rebuke one's mistakes provides a shield against downfall. Who are great enough to destroy him who has servants that have power to rebuke him ?
