In a peaceful village, a young boy named Somu loved gardening. One summer, his father decided to plant a large mango orchard and needed a helper. A young man named Ravi arrived. Ravi looked energetic and spoke very confidently, so Somu's father hired him immediately without asking much about his experience. However, Ravi was careless and neglected the plants. Soon, the young saplings began to wither. Somu felt sad seeing the garden dying. A few days later, Somu's friend Kathir came by. Kathir was a quiet boy, but he knew everything about plants. Somu's father felt hesitant. 'He is so quiet; can we really trust him to do the hard work?' he wondered. But Somu insisted, 'Father, I have seen Kathir work; he is reliable.' They decided to give Kathir a chance. Under Kathir's care, the garden flourished and turned lush green. Somu's father realized his mistake. If he had chosen Ravi without checking, he lost the plants; if he had doubted Kathir despite knowing his skill, he would have lost a great helper. Both mistakes lead to regret.
The Right Choice
The story illustrates the two pitfalls mentioned in the Kural: impulsive hiring without scrutiny and unnecessary doubt in proven talent. To make choice of one who has not been examined, and to entertain doubts respecting one who has been chosen, will produce irremediable sorrow
