In a peaceful village lived a boy named Arjun. Arjun was kind-hearted and made friends very easily. One afternoon, a new boy named Rohan moved to the village. Rohan spoke very sweetly and seemed like a wonderful person. Without asking anyone about Rohan's character, Arjun quickly became his best friend. One day, Arjun lent Rohan his favorite wooden toy. To Arjun's shock, Rohan took the toy and ran away, never to return it. Arjun felt heartbroken. His father sat him down and said, 'Arjun, true friendship is a treasure, but you must check the quality of the person before you let them in. If you bond with someone without knowing their true nature, you may face great loss later.' Arjun realized that he had been too hasty. He learned that knowing a person's character is the first step to a lasting friendship.
The Careful Choice
The story illustrates the danger of forming friendships without due inquiry, as warned by the Kural. As those who are of a friendly nature will not forsake (a friend) after once loving (him), there is no evil so great as contracting a friendship without due inquiry
