In a peaceful village lived a young boy named Arjun. His best friend was Ravi, a kind-hearted and honest boy who always helped others. One day, a new boy named Vikram joined their school. Vikram came from a wealthy family and always carried the latest toys and delicious sweets. He approached Arjun and said, 'If you want to play with my amazing toys, you must only hang out with me and ignore everyone else.' Vikram was known for making fun of others and telling lies to get his way. Arjun felt tempted by the shiny toys, but he felt uneasy about Vikram's behavior. After a few days of trying to be Vikram's friend, Arjun saw how Vikram treated others unkindly. Arjun realized that no matter how many gifts Vikram offered, his character was not good. Arjun decided to stay close to Ravi, whose friendship was pure and sincere, and he politely distanced himself from Vikram. He learned that a good heart is worth more than any toy.
The Choice of a True Friend
The story illustrates the Kural's wisdom by showing Arjun choosing the pure friendship of Ravi over the materialistic but flawed friendship of Vikram. Continue to enjoy the friendship of the pure; (but) renounce even with a gift, the friendship of those who do not agree (with the world)
Cherish the friendship of the virtuous, but walk away from the company of the unkind, no matter what they offer.
