In a peaceful village lived a kind boy named Arjun. Arjun had many acquaintances, but one boy named Rohan was his closest companion. However, Arjun soon noticed something strange. Rohan would only play with him if Arjun shared his snacks or gave him his toys. One afternoon, Arjun brought a beautiful new kite to the park. When Rohan saw it, his eyes gleamed. 'Arjun, give me that kite, and I will be your best friend forever,' Rohan demanded. Arjun felt a pang in his heart. He realized that Rohan wasn't interested in playing together; he was only interested in what Arjun possessed. That evening, Arjun's grandfather sat him down. 'Arjun,' he said gently, 'a true friend cares for you, not for what you can give them. Someone who calculates the profit of a friendship is no different from a thief who only seeks gain.' Arjun understood. He decided to distance himself from Rohan and instead looked for friends who valued him for who he was, not for what he had.
The Profit-Seeking Friend
The story illustrates that those who treat friendship as a transaction for gain are as untrustworthy as thieves, reflecting Kural 813. Friendship who calculate the profits (of their friendship), prostitutes who are bent on obtaining their gains, and thieves are (all) of the same character
