In a peaceful village lived two friends, Karthik and Rohan. Karthik was known for his bright mind and steady hands; whatever he built or did shone with excellence. Rohan, however, had a growing habit of seeking comfort in alcohol. One summer, the village announced a grand festival. Karthik worked tirelessly, creating beautiful decorations that made the whole village glow with joy. Everyone admired his skill and character. Rohan, wanting to join the celebrations early, spent his time drinking. On the day of the festival, instead of helping, Rohan was found stumbling and confused, unable to remember his duties. The villagers, who once respected him, now looked at him with pity and disappointment. Rohan realized that his addiction was stealing his dignity and the respect he had earned. He decided to change, choosing discipline over the bottle. Slowly, as he regained his focus, the light of his reputation began to shine once more.
The Fading Light
The story illustrates how the habit of drinking causes a person to lose their influence and the brilliance of their fame, as stated in the Kural. Those who always thirst after drink will neither inspire fear (in others) nor retain the light (of their fame)
