In a peaceful village lived a young man named Arjun. He was known for his wisdom and calm nature. His best friend, Ravi, however, had fallen into the trap of drinking. Whenever Ravi drank, he lost all sense of reality. One evening, after a village gathering, Ravi had accidentally broken a neighbor's precious vase and was stubbornly claiming he hadn't even been near it. Arjun sat beside him, trying to reason. 'Ravi, please listen. You know what happened. Admitting it is the right thing to do,' Arjun said softly. But Ravi, clouded by intoxication, laughed wildly and mumbled nonsense, completely ignoring Arjun's logic. An elder in the village, Mr. Raghav, watched this and approached Arjun. 'Arjun, why are you trying so hard? Trying to reason with a drunkard is like carrying a lit torch underwater to find a lost person. The water will only extinguish your flame, and you will find nothing.' Arjun realized that logic cannot reach a mind that is not present.
The Flickering Flame
The story illustrates the Kural's metaphor of using a torch underwater to show that logic is useless against intoxication. Reasoning with a drunkard is like going under water with a torch in search of a drowned man
