In a peaceful valley lived a couple, Meera and Arjun. Meera was kind-hearted, but she had a habit of getting upset over small things and refusing to speak to Arjun for hours. One evening, Arjun returned home with a bouquet of jasmine flowers, Meera's favorite. However, he was a little late because of work. Instead of welcoming him, Meera turned her face away in anger and went to the corner of the room. Arjun felt hurt and sat silently. After some time, Meera's anger faded. She looked at the beautiful flowers and felt guilty. 'He brought these for me, why was I so harsh?' she thought. She walked up to Arjun, smiled, and began talking to him as if nothing happened. But Arjun felt confused. He thought, 'If she can be so angry one moment and so sweet the next, how can I ever trust her reactions?' Meera realized that her sudden mood swings were making Arjun hesitant to share his feelings with her. She learned that being unpredictable in one's emotions can break the bond of trust.
The Fickle Heart
The story reflects the Kural's warning that if one behaves sulkily and then suddenly becomes affectionate, others will lose confidence in consulting or trusting that person. O my soul! you would not first seem sulky and then enjoy (him); who then would in future consult you about such things?
