In a cozy corner of a lush forest, a rabbit named Pip lived in a perfectly tidy burrow. Pip took great pride in keeping every leaf and twig in its rightful place.
One sunny afternoon, while Pip was out searching for fresh clover, a mischievous squirrel named Squeak scurried into the burrow. Squeak wasn't being mean, but he was very clumsy. He tossed dried berries around, scattered the bedding, and left the burrow in total disarray. When Pip returned, he couldn't believe his eyes. The beautiful home he worked so hard to maintain was a mess!
Overcome with anger, Pip began chasing Squeak, shouting, "Look what you've done!" Squeak, feeling cornered and defensive, started throwing small pebbles back at Pip. The two continued to bicker and scuffle loudly near the edge of the woods.
A cunning fox named Rusty, who had been watching from behind a bush, saw an opportunity. "Stop, stop!" Rusty called out with a fake smile. "Why waste your energy fighting? Come over to that hollow log near the clearing. I am a wise judge, and I will settle this dispute fairly for both of you."
Eager to prove they were right, Pip and Squeak agreed. They hopped and scurried over to the hollow log. However, the log was located in a narrow passage where Rusty could easily block their exit. As soon as they sat down, Rusty's expression changed from friendly to hungry. "First, a punishment for the squirrel who caused the mess!" Rusty barked, and before Squeak could even squeak, the fox had swallowed him whole.
Pip trembled with fear, but Rusty wasn't done. "And now, a punishment for the rabbit who brought such a loud commotion to my forest!" With a swift snap, the fox caught Pip as well. By trying to involve a stranger in their petty argument, both friends had lost everything.
