In a peaceful valley lived an elderly farmer named Somu. He had three sons who were hardworking but had one major flaw: they could never agree on anything. They spent most of their time arguing over small things, which meant the farm work was often neglected. Somu watched them with a heavy heart, wondering how to teach them the value of working together.
One sunny afternoon, Somu called his sons to the courtyard. He held a bundle of thin wooden sticks in his hands.
The First Lesson: Somu handed a single stick to each son and said, 'Break this.' With a simple snap, each son broke his stick effortlessly. They laughed, thinking it was a very easy task. 'That was simple, Father!' the eldest son remarked.
The Second Lesson: Then, Somu took several sticks and tied them tightly together with a strong rope to form a single, thick bundle. He handed the heavy bundle to his eldest son and said, 'Now, try to break this entire bundle at once.' The eldest son strained and pulled, but the bundle wouldn't even bend. The middle son tried with all his might, grunting with effort, but failed. Even the youngest son, who was quite strong, could not make a single crack in the bundle.
Somu looked at his disappointed sons and said softly, 'My sons, when the sticks were alone, they were weak and easy to break. But when they were bound together, they became unbreakable. You are just like these sticks. If you continue to fight and stay divided, you will be easily defeated by life's challenges. But if you stand together as one, no force in the world can break you.'
The sons realized the truth in his words. They felt a deep sense of regret for all the time they had wasted on petty arguments. From that day forward, they stopped fighting and began to work as a team. By combining their strengths, their farm flourished like never before, and they eventually became the most prosperous family in the valley.
