In a peaceful village lived a young boy named Kavi and his father, Ravi. Ravi was a hardworking man who provided everything for his family. One evening, Ravi brought home some meat and said, 'Kavi, let's cook this for dinner; it will be delicious.' As Kavi looked at the food, he noticed a small rabbit hopping near the bushes outside their window, playing joyfully with its tiny kits. Kavi felt a sudden pang in his heart. He thought to himself, 'If this meal came from taking a life away, how can it truly satisfy me?' He looked up at his father and said softly, 'Father, isn't protecting life the greatest form of kindness? I feel that eating something that cost a life would take away my peace.' Ravi paused, looking into Kavi's innocent eyes. He realized the depth of his son's compassion. Smiling warmly, Ravi replied, 'You are right, my son. To preserve life is the highest virtue.' From that day on, they chose to live in harmony with all living creatures, enjoying meals that brought no harm to others.
The Heart of Kindness
The story illustrates the Kural's teaching that kindness is the preservation of life, and therefore, consuming flesh is contrary to true virtue. If it be asked what is kindness and what its opposite, the answer would be preservation and destruction of life; and therefore it is not right to feed on the flesh (obtained by taking away life)
