The Mirror of Compassion

In a peaceful village lived a young boy named Arjun and his wise grandfather. Arjun was a kind-hearted boy who loved all living creatures. One evening, during a village feast, Arjun's friends were excitedly talking about various meat dishes. Feeling hungry and curious, Arjun wanted to join them. His grandfather, noticing this, sat him down beside a small garden. He pointed to a tiny, inflamed sore on a leaf and asked, "Arjun, if you had a painful wound on your skin, how would you feel about someone touching it or treating it as something ordinary?" Arjun replied, "It would feel terrible, Grandpa. I wouldn't want anyone to hurt it." The grandfather nodded gently and said, "Just as we find a wound on our own body unpleasant and something to be healed, we should realize that the flesh of another living being is also part of a living soul. Once we see that every body is a vessel for life, we will naturally choose not to consume it." From that day on, Arjun looked at animals not as food, but as fellow beings with feelings. His heart grew even kinder.
