In a peaceful village lived a young man named Arjun. He was hardworking and kind, but one day, under the influence of bad company, he began to drink alcohol. Slowly, this habit took control of him. One evening, Arjun stumbled home, heavily intoxicated. His mother, Lakshmi, stood at the door, her eyes filling with tears of disappointment. Seeing the pain on her face hurt Arjun more than any physical wound. In his drunken state, he realized, 'If seeing my own mother's face brings me such shame and sadness, how much more painful will it be to face the wise and respected elders of our village?' That moment of clarity hit him hard. He realized that intoxication doesn't just cloud the mind; it breaks the hearts of those who love us. From that day on, Arjun gave up drinking and dedicated himself to living a life of dignity.
The Shadow of Regret
The story illustrates that if intoxication causes distress even in the presence of a mother, it will be even more humiliating before wise people. Intoxication is painful even in the presence of (one's) mother; what will it not then be in that of the wise ?
