He wasn't just looking; he was lost in thought, admiring how the sunlight danced on her face and how graceful she looked while working. He was completely mesmerized by her beauty. Suddenly, Nila turned around and caught his gaze. Instead of smiling, she puffed out her cheeks and walked toward him with a playful frown. 'What is it, Ilango?' she asked, her voice tinged with feigned anger. 'Why are you staring at me so intensely? What kind of thoughts are running through your mind while you look at me like that?' Ilango realized that her anger wasn't real; it was a sign of her shy affection. He smiled, and soon, her pretend anger melted into laughter. They spent the rest of the evening sharing stories and joy.
The Sweetness of a Grumpy Smile
The story illustrates the Kural by showing how a husband's admiring gaze can provoke a beautiful, feigned anger from the wife, reflecting the intimacy of their bond. Even when I look on her contemplating (her beauty), she is displeased and says, "With whose thought have you (thus) looked on my person?"
