Deep within a sun-drenched forest lived a fox named Felix. Felix was known throughout the woods for being incredibly clever, but his cleverness often led him into trouble. One scorching summer, the forest streams dried up, leaving all the animals thirsty. Felix set off on a long journey to find a hidden spring.
After wandering for hours, he spotted an old, stone well near a clearing. 'There must be water in there!' Felix thought excitedly. He rushed to the edge of the well, but as he leaned over to peek, his paw slipped on the mossy stones. With a loud splash, Felix tumbled down into the dark, cold water at the bottom.
'Help! Somebody, please help me!' Felix cried out, his voice echoing against the stone walls. He tried to climb the slippery sides, but he kept sliding back down. He felt lonely and frightened.
Not long after, a goat named Gideon came wandering by, grazing on the nearby grass. Hearing the strange cries, Gideon approached the well and peered over the edge.
"Felix? What are you doing down there?" Gideon asked, puzzled.
Felix’s mind raced. He knew he couldn't climb out alone, and he couldn't ask Gideon to jump in to save him—that would be too dangerous. He decided to use a trick instead. Putting on a bright, happy voice, Felix said, "Oh, Gideon! You won't believe it! This well is filled with the sweetest, coolest water I have ever tasted. It is much better than the dry grass outside!"
Gideon, who was very thirsty, felt a spark of hope. "Is it really that good?" he asked.
"It is wonderful! Just jump down and try it for yourself!" Felix encouraged him.
Without a second thought, Gideon leaped into the well. He landed in the water and immediately began to drink happily. "You were right, Felix! This water is delicious!" Gideon called out.
Felix smirked. "I'm glad you like it. Now, let's figure out how to get us both out. I have a plan. You climb onto my back first and step out of the well. Once you are safe, I will climb up your back to join you."
Gideon, trusting his friend, agreed. He carefully stepped onto Felix’s sturdy shoulders. As soon as Gideon reached the top edge of the well, Felix made a sudden, powerful leap. He scrambled out of the well and onto the dry ground.
"Wait! Felix! Now help me up!" Gideon shouted from below.
Felix looked down and laughed. "How can I help you from up here, you silly goat? You should have thought twice before believing me!" With that, Felix disappeared into the bushes. Gideon sighed heavily, realizing that his lack of caution had led him into a trap.
