In a peaceful valley, a farmer named Samuel owned a flock of gentle sheep. To keep them safe from wandering predators at night, Samuel brought home a brave dog named Rex.
Rex took his job very seriously, but he soon let pride get the better of him. He began to think, 'I am the king of this farm! Without my watchful eyes, these sheep wouldn't last a day.'
One sunny morning, Samuel spread fresh, green grass and grains across the meadow for the sheep to eat. As soon as Samuel walked toward the farmhouse to tend to other chores, the sheep rushed toward the food, hungry and excited.
Suddenly, Rex jumped right into the middle of the feeding area. He stood firmly on the pile of grain, blocking the path. 'Stop right there!' Rex barked loudly. 'I am on duty! You shall not eat a single blade of grass until I give you my permission!'
The sheep, confused and hungry, backed away in fear. When Samuel returned a few minutes later, he saw the sheep standing sadly at a distance and Rex acting like a boss over the food. Samuel was disappointed and angry. 'Rex, your job is to protect them, not to control them!' he said sternly. Rex realized that by overstepping his bounds, he had lost the trust of his master.
