The Cost of Envy

The story illustrates Kural 166, showing how envy leads to social isolation and eventual destitution. He who is envious at a gift (made to another) will with his relations utterly perish destitute of food and rainment

He who envies the gifts given to others will lose both his relations and his basic necessities.

In a peaceful village lived two friends, Somu and Raghu. Somu was known for his generous heart; he always shared whatever he had with those in need. Raghu, however, carried a heavy shadow in his heart—envy. Whenever someone else received a blessing, Raghu felt a sting of bitterness. One sunny afternoon, the village elder honored Somu for his kindness by gifting him a beautiful silk shawl and a basket of grain. Seeing this, Raghu’s heart burned with jealousy. Instead of being happy for his friend, he felt insulted. This bitterness turned into a wall; Raghu stopped talking to his relatives and friends, feeling that everyone was against him. He became cold and distant. Slowly, his wealth dwindled, and because he had pushed everyone away with his sour attitude, no one came to help him when he fell on hard times. While Somu lived a life surrounded by love and abundance, Raghu found himself alone, struggling for even a simple meal and a decent cloth to wear. His envy had cost him everything.
