In a peaceful village lived a boy named Arjun and his father, Vikram. Vikram was a very respected man, known for his grand donations to the temple and his long periods of silent meditation. Everyone admired his piety. One afternoon, while playing in the garden, Arjun found a beautiful gold ring that the village headman had lost. When Arjun showed it to his father, Vikram whispered, 'Arjun, let's hide this for a while. If we return it now, people might think we found it by accident, and it might affect our reputation.' Arjun felt a heavy weight in his heart. He realized that keeping the ring was like keeping a lie inside him. The next morning, Arjun went straight to the headman and handed him the ring, explaining exactly where he found it. While Vikram was known for his outward acts of virtue, the villagers praised Arjun for his inner honesty. Arjun learned that speaking the truth from the heart is the greatest virtue of all.
The Value of Truth
The story illustrates that honesty from the heart holds more spiritual value than external acts of charity or penance. He, who speaks truth with all his heart, is superior to those who make gifts and practise austerities
