The Wealthy Heart and the Silent Trees

In a lush valley lived a young man named Vikram. Vikram was incredibly wealthy, owning vast lands and golden grain. However, Vikram had a cold heart. He lived as if no one else existed. One scorching afternoon, an old traveler stumbled into Vikram's garden, parched and exhausted. 'Please, young master, a drop of water?' the traveler pleaded. Vikram didn't even lift his eyes from his ledger. He ignored the man's suffering completely. An elder from the village, Grandpa Somu, witnessed this. A few days later, during a grand feast Vikram was hosting, a small boy accidentally tripped and spilled juice on Vikram's fine silk robe. Vikram erupted in anger, shouting at the terrified child. Grandpa Somu approached him calmly and said, 'Vikram, look at the great banyan trees around us. They provide shade and fruit to everyone, yet they do not 'see' the pain of the thirsty or the weary. They simply exist. A human who has eyes but lacks the kindness to notice and help another's need is just like those trees—present in body, but blind in spirit.' Vikram felt a sudden pang of shame. He realized that having sight is useless if one cannot see the suffering of others. From that day on, he became known not for his wealth, but for his kindness.
