The Fire and the Heart

In a peaceful valley lived a young boy named Arjun. Arjun was clever and fast, but he had a flaw: he was often rude to the elders and wise people of the village. He believed that strength and speed were the only things that mattered. One afternoon, a wise old man named Samuel arrived in the village. Samuel spoke softly and carried himself with great dignity. When Arjun saw him, he made a mocking joke about Samuel's slow walk. Samuel simply smiled and continued his way. A few days later, a sudden forest fire swept through the valley. Panic broke out. Arjun tried to run, but the smoke and heat trapped him. He narrowly escaped the flames, stumbling into a river to save himself. Though his skin was singed and he was shaken, he survived the fire. However, as he sat by the river, a different kind of pain hit him. He remembered how he had treated Samuel. He realized that while he could escape the physical fire, he could not escape the guilt of having disrespected a soul of such greatness. The physical burns would heal, but the shame of his disrespect felt like a fire in his heart that wouldn't go out. He realized that losing one's character is far more dangerous than losing one's life. Arjun eventually went to Samuel, bowed his head, and asked for forgiveness.
