The Mirror of the Heart

The story illustrates that noble character is defined by consistency in action and a natural fear of doing wrong. Consistency (of thought, word and deed) and fear (of sin) are conjointly natural only to the high-born

In a peaceful village lived a young boy named Arjun. Arjun was known for his kindness and honesty. One afternoon, while walking through the bustling market with his father, a merchant, Arjun noticed a leather pouch lying near a fruit stall.

His friend, Rohan, whispered, 'Arjun, look! No one saw it fall. We could buy those new wooden toys with this money!' Arjun looked at the pouch. For a moment, he imagined the joy of the new toys. But then, a heavy feeling settled in his chest. He remembered his father's words about integrity.

'If I take this, my hands will have the money, but my heart will be heavy with guilt,' Arjun thought. He realized that being a good person wasn't just about what people saw, but about what he felt inside. He picked up the pouch and ran toward the elderly man who had dropped it.

When he returned home, Arjun told his father everything. 'Father, I felt a moment of temptation, but the thought of doing something wrong scared me more than the thought of losing the toys.' His father hugged him tightly and said, 'True nobility is when your words, your actions, and your conscience all move in the same direction. You have shown the character of a truly great person.'

The Lesson

True nobility lies in the harmony of thought, word, and deed, guided by a conscience that fears wrongdoing.
