In a peaceful village lived a hardworking farmer named Samuel. He had a small piece of land and a loyal ox. One day, the wealthiest man in the village, Mr. Sterling, approached Samuel with a troubling request. Mr. Sterling wanted Samuel to help him hide some dishonest dealings to make more profit from the villagers.
Samuel was tempted. He thought to himself, 'If I accept this, I could build a large house and live a life of luxury.' But a small voice inside him whispered, 'If you do this, you will lose the respect of everyone you know. Your name will be stained forever.'
Samuel decided to refuse the offer. Mr. Sterling laughed and called him a fool, saying, 'You will never grow rich living like this!' A few months later, Mr. Sterling's dishonest activities were discovered by the entire village. He lost his reputation and his friends, and soon, no one would even speak to him. Samuel, on the other hand, remained humble and lived simply, but he walked with his head held high because everyone respected his honesty.
Samuel realized that while he didn't have gold, he had something far more precious: his dignity.
