In a peaceful village nestled at the foot of a mountain lived a young man named Viswam. He was known throughout the village for his sharp wit and calm demeanor. One evening, as Viswam was walking home after a long day, he noticed some suspicious shadows moving near his cottage. Upon closer inspection, he realized that four men were lurking in the bushes, watching his house intently. They were thieves.
Instead of panicking or calling for help immediately, Viswam decided to outsmart them. He quietly slipped into his house and whispered the news to his wife. She gasped in fear, but Viswam held her hand firmly. 'Stay calm,' he whispered. 'I have a plan to teach them a lesson they will never forget.'
Viswam then began to speak loudly, making sure his voice reached the eavesdroppers outside. 'My dear, with all these robberies happening in the village, we must be extra careful. Let us put all our gold coins and precious jewelry into this heavy iron chest and hide it safely.'
The thieves, listening from the shadows, exchanged excited glances. 'This is perfect!' their leader whispered. 'We don't even need to break into the house; we just need to get that chest.'
Viswam walked outside carrying a heavy wooden chest. To the thieves' delight, he tossed it into the deep well in his backyard with a loud splash. He then went back inside and locked the doors. 'Now our treasures are safe at the bottom of the well,' he said loudly to himself, 'where no thief can easily reach them.'
The thieves were disappointed by the deep water in the well, but their leader was cunning. 'Don't worry,' he said. 'We will use buckets to draw the water out and pour it away. Once the water level drops, the chest will be ours!'
Throughout the night, the thieves worked tirelessly, pulling buckets of water from the well and pouring them out. However, the water didn't go into the village drains; it flowed directly into Viswam's garden. Viswam and his wife watched from the window, amused. 'Look at that!' Viswam chuckled. 'They are doing our gardening for us!'
While the thieves were busy, Viswam had already sent a message through a neighbor to alert the village guards. As the first light of dawn appeared, the guards surrounded the cottage. The thieves, exhausted and soaked, were caught red-handed trying to reach the well. They were led away to the village jail.
Viswam was praised by everyone for his quick thinking. The thieves, on the other hand, could only regret their foolishness, having spent the entire night watering a garden instead of finding gold.
