In the heart of a vast jungle lived an old lion named Karikalan. Once, he was the most feared ruler, but age had taken its toll. His teeth were no longer sharp, and he could no longer chase down fast prey. Driven by hunger and cunning, Karikalan decided to use his wits instead of his strength.

He called a meeting of all the animals and announced, "I am growing old and wish to retire. I will hold a grand contest to find the next King of the Forest. Whoever answers my riddles correctly shall take my throne!"

The animals, eager for power and prestige, began visiting the lion's cave one by one. However, Karikalan was not looking for a successor; he was looking for a meal. He would lure the animals inside and devour them secretly. Soon, many animals had gone into the cave, but none had ever walked out.

One bright morning, a clever fox named Giri arrived at the cave to participate in the contest. Karikalan, sitting regally at the entrance, called out, "Welcome, wise fox! Step inside and face your challenge."

Giri took a few steps forward but suddenly stopped. He looked closely at the dusty ground near the cave entrance. "Wait, Great King!" Giri exclaimed. "Your contest sounds wonderful, but I notice something very strange. There are many footprints leading into your cave, but I cannot see a single footprint leading out!"

Karikalan froze, realizing his trick had been discovered. Before the lion could lunge, Giri turned and sprinted away as fast as his legs could carry him. Giri quickly warned the other animals about the lion's trap, and from that day on, no animal ever fell victim to the old lion's deceit again.
