High atop a jagged mountain peak lived a mighty eagle named Aquila. Aquila possessed enormous, powerful wings that could slice through the strongest winds with ease. One sunny afternoon, while Aquila was resting on a sturdy pine branch, something unusual caught its eye.
A bright, colorful kite was tangled in the branches of a nearby tree, dancing wildly in the breeze. Curious, Aquila flew closer and asked, "Strange traveler, you have no feathers or wings, yet you dance so high in the air. How do you do it?"
The kite puffed up its paper chest and replied proudly, "I am a kite! I don't need wings like yours. Look at me! I can soar much higher than you ever could. I dance among the clouds while you struggle against the wind!"
Aquila let out a gentle, knowing laugh. "It is true that you reach great heights," the eagle said softly. "But look closely at the long string trailing behind you. That string is held by a hand on the ground. You are not flying because of your own strength; you are being pulled and pushed by that thread. You may be high, but you are not free."
Aquila spread its wings wide, feeling the pure, unattached wind. "I fly because I choose to. I can soar to the sun or dive to the valley whenever I wish. My wings belong to me, and my spirit belongs to the sky." The kite stopped its dancing and looked down at its string, realizing that its height came at the cost of its freedom.
Moral
True greatness lies in being free, not just being high.
