In a peaceful valley sat the town of Serenity, where people lived in harmony. However, their peace was shattered when a massive swarm of rats invaded the town. The rats scurried through kitchens, nibbling on grain and ruining food supplies. The citizens were exhausted and worried, unable to find a solution to this tiny but overwhelming menace.
One afternoon, a wandering musician arrived at the town gates. He carried a polished wooden flute and a confident smile. "I can lead these rats away from your homes with the magic of my music," he proposed. "In exchange, I ask for a bag of gold coins once the task is done." The town leaders, desperate to reclaim their homes, agreed to his terms immediately.
The musician began to play. The melody was enchanting, swirling through the streets like a gentle breeze. Entranced by the sound, the rats stopped their mischief and began to follow the musician in a long, rhythmic line. He led them out of the town, across the stone bridge, and deep into the wild woods, eventually guiding them into a distant marsh where they could no longer bother anyone.
When the musician returned to the town, he asked for his reward. But greed had taken hold of the townspeople. "The job was too easy," they whispered. "We won't give you the full bag of gold. Here is only a few coins."
The musician did not argue. He simply bowed and left. But he had a plan to teach them a lesson. The next day, he returned with a different tune—a playful, irresistible melody. As he played, the children of the town, captivated by the rhythm, began to skip and dance after him. Before anyone could stop them, the musician had led the children deep into the forest and safely tucked them into a hollow cave.
Panic struck the town. The parents realized that by trying to cheat the musician, they had lost what mattered most. "We tried to be clever and cheat him, but we have only cheated ourselves of our children's joy!" the Mayor cried.
Realizing their mistake, the townspeople rushed to the forest. They found the musician and pleaded, "Please, forgive our greed. We will give you every single coin we promised. Just bring our children home."
The musician smiled, opened the cave, and let the children out. As the families embraced, he said, "A promise made should be a promise kept. If you try to deceive others, you will only end up deceiving yourselves."
