In a bright valley, a merchant named Silas traveled from village to village with his faithful pony, Pip. Pip was a lazy animal, but Silas was often so busy counting his coins that he forgot to give Pip a pat on the head or a tasty carrot as a reward.
One sunny morning, Silas loaded Pip with heavy sacks of sugar. As they reached a shallow stream, Pip thought to himself, "I am so tired of this heavy load. Let me try something clever."
As they crossed the water, Pip pretended to stumble and fell into the stream. The sugar began to dissolve in the water, making the sacks much lighter. Pip felt relieved. "This is wonderful! If I fall in the water, my work becomes easy!" he thought happily.
For the next few days, Pip repeated this trick. Every time they crossed the stream, Pip would 'accidentally' fall, and the sugar would wash away, making his journey effortless. Silas noticed the sacks were getting emptier, but he didn't realize Pip was doing it on purpose.
Finally, Silas decided to test Pip. Instead of sugar, he loaded the pony with large, fluffy sacks of cotton. When they reached the stream, Pip, thinking he was being smart, jumped into the water again. But instead of getting lighter, the cotton soaked up the water like a sponge. Suddenly, the sacks became incredibly heavy! Pip struggled to stand, his legs trembling under the massive weight.
"Oh no! What happened?" Pip cried in his heart. He realized that his trick had backfired. Silas helped Pip get out of the water and said, "Hard work is better than a clever trick, Pip."
Pip learned his lesson and never tried to cheat again. From that day on, he carried his loads with pride.
