It was a bright and sunny morning. A young boy named Arjun was excitedly preparing for a long journey to visit the grand festival in the nearby valley. His mother, seeing his excitement, prepared a hearty breakfast for him to fuel his travels.
As Arjun sat down to eat, he took out a small fruit knife to slice an apple. His mother looked at him and said softly, "Arjun, could you please hand that knife to me for a moment?"
Arjun picked up the knife. Instead of just tossing it toward her, he carefully turned it so that the sharp, dangerous edge faced him, while the smooth, safe handle was extended toward his mother. He handed it to her with great care.
His mother smiled warmly and said, "Arjun, you have just passed a very important test without even knowing it. The way you handled that knife shows me that you are growing into a wise person."
Arjun looked puzzled. "What do you mean, Mother?" he asked.
"In life, people will often say things that are sharp and hurtful, much like the edge of a knife," she explained. "When someone speaks with anger or cruelty, do not let those sharp words cut you. Instead, be like the handle of the knife. Accept the sharp parts of life with patience, but always offer kindness and stability to others. Use your words to protect and comfort, not to wound."
Arjun realized that his small, thoughtful action was actually a reflection of how he should face the world. With a heart full of wisdom, he finished his meal and set off on his journey.
