Thirukkural Story

The Unstoppable River

The story illustrates that human efforts to bypass a situation often become part of the inevitable outcome, mirroring the Kural. What is stronger than fate ? If we think of an expedient (to avert it), it will itself be with us before (the thought)

In a peaceful village lived a young boy named Arjun. Arjun was known for his brilliant mind and his habit of planning everything down to the smallest detail. One summer, the village prepared for a grand festival. Arjun decided to build a magnificent paper boat to sail in the local stream during the festivities.

'I will make sure nothing stops my boat,' Arjun boasted to his friends. 'I will build small stone walls along the path so that no pebble or twig can obstruct its journey.' He spent days carefully calculating the route and building his miniature defenses. He felt completely in control of the outcome.

However, nature had other plans. Just as the festival began, an unexpected and heavy downpour hit the village. The gentle stream transformed into a roaring river within minutes. The very stone walls Arjun had built to protect his boat were washed away by the surging water. His boat, instead of sailing calmly, was swept away by the powerful current.

His grandfather, watching him with a gentle smile, sat beside him. 'Arjun, your plans were wonderful. But sometimes, even when we try our hardest to avert a situation, our very efforts become part of the unfolding destiny. Fate has a way of moving through our own intentions.' Arjun realized that while planning is wise, one must also accept the forces beyond human control.

The Lesson

Even our attempts to avoid fate are often woven into the fabric of destiny itself.
