There was a beautiful kingdom called Cholapuram, ruled by Prince Maaran. Maaran was a kind-hearted ruler, but some of his officials were quite cunning. One day, Maaran entrusted the responsibility of distributing food grains to his close friend, Kathir.
Kathir was intelligent, but he had a small greed within him. He began hiding a portion of the grains meant for the people for his own use and for his friends. Seeing this, other workers thought, 'The Prince doesn't notice Kathir's dishonesty; if he doesn't care, why should we follow the rules?' Slowly, corruption began to spread throughout the town.
Realizing something was wrong, Maaran decided to take action. Instead of just listening to reports, he went to the granary personally to observe how things were being done. There, he caught Kathir trying to hide a sack of grain. Maaran did not shout; instead, he spoke calmly. 'Kathir, this small mistake of yours will lead the entire kingdom down a crooked path. If you are honest, only then will this world be honest.'
Maaran's direct intervention changed Kathir's heart. Kathir felt deeply ashamed and asked for forgiveness. From that day on, Maaran made it a habit to regularly check on his officials' conduct. Because the leader watched over his people closely, the people of Cholapuram returned to the path of truth and honesty.
