One day, a great tension arose between the Chola King and a neighboring ruler. The neighboring King was known to be very proud and difficult to please. He refused to listen to anyone. The Chola King needed someone special to travel to the other kingdom to negotiate peace.
Ilango’s father, a wise elder, suggested Ilango for the task. Ilango was nervous. 'Father, I am just a simple man. How can I face a mighty King?' he asked. His father smiled and said, 'It is not your words that will win him, but your character. Your kindness to your people and the noble values you were raised with will be your greatest strength.'
When Ilango arrived at the neighboring court, he didn't act with fear or arrogance. Instead, he spoke with deep respect and a calm grace. He listened more than he spoke. He showed genuine concern for the neighboring King's well-being, treating him not as an enemy, but as a respected leader. The King was struck by Ilango’s politeness and the dignity he carried, which reflected his upbringing.
Because Ilango spoke with a heart full of affection and a manner full of virtue, the King opened his heart too. A peaceful treaty was signed, and a war was avoided. Ilango returned home, knowing that his character had done what weapons could not.
