One summer, a massive project was launched to build a new dam. Dharmam was put in charge of managing the funds. During this time, a merchant approached him and whispered, "Dharmam, if we adjust the accounts slightly, we can keep a small portion for ourselves. The King will never notice."
Dharmam looked at the merchant and replied firmly, "A small shadow can ruin a bright day. I will not risk the King's trust for a handful of gold."
However, a junior official named Ravi, who worked under Dharmam, thought differently. He believed that a tiny error in the accounts wouldn't hurt anyone. He decided to hide a small amount of money. But King Karikalan was a keen observer. Within weeks, he noticed a discrepancy in the records. The King's suspicion was instantly aroused.
Ravi was terrified. He went to the King, weeping and begging for forgiveness. He explained it was a mistake and promised to pay it back. But the King's heart had changed. The seed of doubt had been planted, and no amount of explaining could wash it away. Ravi lost his position and the respect of the people.
