In a peaceful valley lived a young man named Kari and his elderly mother. Kari was a hardworking person, but a sudden flood destroyed his small farm, leaving them with nothing. One evening, as hunger gnawed at them, Kari looked at an empty bowl and thought, 'Maybe I should go to the village square and ask for alms. It might be easier than starving.' He felt a heavy sadness in his heart. His mother, seeing his hesitation, took his hand and said, 'My son, if the Creator of this world intended for us to live by begging, why does He not do so Himself? It is better to struggle with honest work than to live by the mercy of others.' Kari felt a surge of strength. Instead of asking for help, he went to the nearby forest to gather wood and took up small labor jobs in the village. Through sweat and perseverance, he rebuilt his farm. He realized that the dignity of labor is far more precious than the ease of begging.

The story illustrates the Kural's message that one should reject the path of mendicancy in favor of honest labor. If the Creator of the world has decreed even begging as a means of livelihood, may he too go abegging and perish
