The entire kingdom of Vijayanagara was buzzing with excitement. It was the birthday of Emperor Krishnadevaraya! The palace was adorned with vibrant flowers and sparkling lamps. One by one, noblemen and wealthy merchants arrived to present the Emperor with magnificent gifts—shining diamonds, golden vessels, and exquisite silk robes.
Amidst the grand procession, Tenali Raman approached, carrying a large, heavy bundle wrapped in cloth. A murmur spread through the crowd as they watched him. "Look at that massive bundle!" whispered a merchant. "Tenali Raman must have found a legendary treasure to bring such a heavy gift to the King!"
Emperor Krishnadevaraya watched with curiosity as Tenali Raman placed the bundle on the floor. Slowly, Tenali began to unpack it. He pulled out layers of cloth, then old papers, and finally, a tiny wooden box. When he opened the small box, a single, small tamarind fruit rolled out and landed near the Emperor's feet.
The Emperor looked surprised and slightly disappointed. "Tenali Raman," he said, "while everyone else has brought treasures of immense value, you have brought only a simple tamarind. What is the meaning of this?"
Tenali Raman bowed respectfully and replied, "Your Majesty, please do not be disappointed. Observe this tamarind. It has a distinct shape and stays separate from everything else, much like a King should stand tall and dignified above his subjects. However, its flavor is something that everyone remembers and enjoys. Similarly, a great ruler should be distinct in his dignity, but his kindness and justice should be as sweet and memorable to his people as the taste of this fruit."
The Emperor smiled, realizing the profound wisdom behind the simple gift. He realized that true greatness lies not in gold, but in the balance of dignity and compassion.
