Near the edge of a lush, green forest lived a playful pack of young dogs. They spent their days chasing butterflies and running through the tall grass. One sunny afternoon, while exploring a new part of the forest boundary, they stumbled upon something unusual lying near a cluster of bushes. It was the thick, heavy skin of a fallen lion!
Not realizing that the mighty king of the forest was no longer there to defend himself, the dogs felt an instant surge of excitement. 'Look at this! We are as strong as kings!' barked one of the dogs. Driven by sudden bravado, the pack began to tear at the skin, ripping it into small pieces and tossing it around as if it were a mere rag. Because the lion was no longer a threat, the task felt incredibly easy and rewarding.
As they played, a wise fox wandered by. Watching the dogs frantically shredding the lion's hide, the fox let out a soft, knowing chuckle.
'Why are you laughing at us, Mr. Fox?' one of the dogs asked, feeling insulted. 'We are conquering a great beast!'
The fox looked at them calmly and replied, 'My dear friends, do not mistake ease for strength. You are only acting brave because the lion is no longer here to fight back. If that lion were still breathing, you wouldn't even dare to approach this spot. True courage is facing a living challenge, not destroying what is already defeated.'
The dogs stopped their play immediately. A heavy silence fell over the group as they realized that their 'victory' was nothing more than a hollow display of pride.
Moral
It is easy to act brave against those who can no longer fight back; true strength is found in facing real challenges.
