In a valley surrounded by emerald hills, lived two young princes, Vikram and Som. Vikram was known for his kindness, but his friend Som was curious about something.
One afternoon, while walking through the gardens, Som asked, "Vikram, you help everyone you meet, yet the elders always speak of the legendary giver, Karna, with much more reverence. Why is his name held so much higher than yours?"
An old wise man, who had been listening, decided to show them the difference. With a wave of his hand, he produced two magnificent chests, overflowing with sparkling sapphires.
"Som," the wise man said, "take this first chest to the village below. Observe what the people truly need, and give to them accordingly. Come back when you are done."
Som set off eagerly. When he reached the village, he organized the people into a neat line. He watched carefully. An old woman needed a warm shawl; a young boy needed books for school; a farmer needed sturdy tools. Som distributed the sapphires to help them acquire these things. As he finished, the villagers gathered around him, cheering, "Bless you, Prince Som! You are so generous!" Som returned to the wise man with a bright, proud smile.
"Now," said the wise man, "take this second chest to the same village and do the same."
Som went back. This time, the villagers were even more excited. "The Prince has returned!" they cried. Som gave them what they needed, but as he did, he found himself waiting for the cheers. He wanted to hear them say how great he was. He stayed long after the giving was done, soaking in the praise.
When he returned, the wise man asked, "So, Som, what did you learn?"
Som replied, "I helped them, and they loved me for it."
The wise man shook his head gently. "You helped them, but you were also feeding your own pride. You were waiting for the applause. A true giver, like Karna, does not look for the reward of praise. He does not wait to be thanked or celebrated. He sees a need, he fills it, and he moves on with a peaceful heart. To give without wanting to be seen is the highest form of kindness."
Moral
True generosity is giving without seeking praise or recognition.
