On a biting winter evening, King Vikram sat on his palace balcony, shivering under the cold wind. "This chill is unbearable!" he complained to his trusted advisor, Birbal.
Birbal smiled calmly and said, "Your Majesty, this wind is gentle compared to the icy stream at the edge of the forest. No one could endure staying in that water for long."
A challenge was set. The King announced that anyone who could stand in the freezing stream for a long time would be rewarded with a bag of gold coins.
A poor woodcutter named Ravi heard the news and decided to try. He stepped into the icy water. His teeth chattered, and his body trembled, but he kept his eyes fixed on a bright lantern hanging from a distant tree. He stood there for a long time, staring at that single point of light, until he finally climbed out.
The King was amazed. "Ravi, how did you manage to endure such extreme cold without shivering uncontrollably?" he asked.
Ravi bowed and replied, "Your Majesty, I was not afraid of the cold; I was afraid of the darkness and the loneliness. By focusing all my attention on that bright lantern, I forgot the sensation of the ice around me."
The King frowned. "So, you didn't conquer the cold; you simply distracted yourself with a light! That is not true bravery. There shall be no reward for you," he declared.
Birbal, seeing the injustice, decided to teach the King a lesson. He invited the King to a grand dinner at his home that very night.
As the dinner was served, the King, who was very hungry, asked, "Birbal, where is my meal? I am starving!"
Birbal replied politely, "It is coming, Your Majesty. I am just finishing the preparations using only the light from that distant street lamp outside."
The King was confused. "What do you mean? You cannot cook a meal with just light!"
Birbal replied, "If a man can endure the freezing waters of a stream just by looking at a distant light, surely we can prepare a meal under its glow. Ravi used that light to strengthen his mind against the cold. His willpower is his true strength."
The King realized his mistake. He understood that Ravi's focus was a sign of incredible mental strength. He immediately summoned Ravi and rewarded him with the promised gold.
