In a peaceful valley lived a hardworking farmer named Kavi. Kavi was known throughout the village for his honesty. One summer, Kavi decided to travel to a distant temple to offer prayers. Before leaving, he placed his life savings—a small wooden box filled with gold coins—in the care of his lifelong friend, Madhav.
"Please keep this safe for me, Madhav. I will return in a week," Kavi said with trust.
When Kavi returned, Madhav’s expression was cold. "What box? I haven't seen you in days, let alone any box!" Madhav claimed. Kavi was heartbroken. He knew Madhav was lying, but he had no proof. Distraught, he went to the village elder to seek justice.
The elder, a wise man named Vikram, summoned Madhav. Madhav looked the elder in the eye and swore, "I swear by the stars, I never touched any box!"
Vikram turned to Kavi. "Tell me, where did you leave this treasure?"
"Under the great banyan tree near the old riverbank," Kavi replied.
Vikram nodded and led both men to the riverbank. Standing before the massive, ancient banyan tree, Vikram shouted, "O Great Banyan! You have seen everything. Return the box to Kavi immediately!"
A long silence followed. The wind rustled the leaves, but nothing happened. Kavi looked down, feeling defeated. Madhav smirked silently.
Vikram turned to Kavi and said, "Do not be sad, Kavi. The tree has already spoken. It has delivered the box to Madhav. Now, Madhav, please hand the box back to your friend."
Kavi looked up, confused. "But sir, the tree did nothing."
Vikram turned his sharp gaze toward Madhav. "Exactly. If Madhav truly never saw the box, how did he know so quickly when I asked him earlier where the tree was located? He knew the exact spot of the tree because he had been there to hide the box!"
Madhav’s face turned pale. He realized his mistake. Under the pressure of the wise elder's logic, he confessed to the theft. Kavi received his gold back, and Madhav learned a lesson he would never forget.
