King Vikram ruled over a vast and prosperous kingdom. As he grew older, he wished to pass the throne to his son, Prince Aditya. However, the wise ministers were hesitant, for Aditya was known for his impulsive nature and lack of foresight.
"My son has a good heart," the King insisted. The ministers, seeking a way to test him, proposed a challenge. "Your Majesty, the farmers are suffering. Large flocks of birds descend upon the fields every day, devouring the crops. If the Prince can solve this crisis, he shall be King. If not, the crown should pass to your daughter."
Prince Aditya accepted the challenge. While inspecting the farmlands, he noticed an elephant flapping its large ears rhythmically. A sudden, half-baked idea struck him. He rushed back to the palace and ordered that a large elephant be sent to every single farmer. To ensure the solution worked, he had heavy bells tied to each elephant's ears.
"Listen!" Aditya boasted to the ministers. "When the elephants flap their ears, the bells will ring loudly. The birds will be terrified by the noise and fly away!"
The next morning, the palace was woken by loud shouting. The King and the ministers hurried outside to find the farmers gathered in anger. "The Prince has ruined us!" they cried.
The King was confused. "Did the bells not scare the birds away?"
One farmer stepped forward, frustrated. "The birds did fly away, Your Majesty. But the elephants you sent have eaten every single grain in our fields! They even trampled the remaining stalks under their massive feet. We are left with nothing!"
The King sighed heavily, realizing his son's mistake. "I must admit, my son acted without thinking."
The ministers suggested, "Perhaps the Princess can find a way to turn this misfortune into an opportunity?"
Princess Meenakshi listened to the problem and smiled calmly. "Father, do not worry. We shall not send the elephants away immediately. Instead, we will use their manure to fertilize the soil, making it richer than ever. We will also use their immense strength to clear the large rocks and stubborn tree stumps from the fields. By the time the monsoon arrives, the land will be perfectly prepared for a bountiful harvest. The kingdom will provide the seeds and support."
The King was delighted. He realized that while Aditya had the spirit, Meenakshi had the wisdom to lead a kingdom.
Moral
A solution that solves one problem but creates another is not a true solution.
