In a peaceful village lived a kind-hearted girl named Nila. Nila worked as a helper in a large house belonging to Mrs. Devi and her daughter, Maya. Unfortunately, Devi and Maya were very unkind. They often gave Nila impossible tasks and teased her. One day, Maya intentionally tore Nila's apron just to see her cry. Another time, Mrs. Devi spilled milk all over the floor and forced Nila to scrub it for hours, mocking her.
One afternoon, while Nila was eating her simple meal, Mrs. Devi shouted, "You must go into the deep forest and bring back a huge bundle of firewood!" Nila hesitantly replied, "But Ma'am, I am too small to carry such a heavy load." This made Mrs. Devi angry, and she knocked Nila's food plate to the floor. Heartbroken, Nila gathered the remaining food into a small cloth bag and headed toward the forest.
As she walked through the woods, Nila spotted a tiny puppy lying near a bush, looking very weak and hungry. Her heart melted with pity. She hurried to a nearby stream, brought some water in a leaf, and gave it to the puppy. Then, she shared the small portion of food she had saved for herself. The puppy lapped up the water and ate the food, slowly regaining its strength. It wagged its tail and looked up at Nila with bright eyes.
Nila continued her journey to find wood, and the little puppy followed her closely. Seeing the puppy still hungry, Nila gave it the very last bit of her food. Suddenly, a bright flash of lightning streaked across the clear sky! In a shimmer of light, the puppy transformed into a handsome Prince. Nila gasped in fear, stepping back. The Prince smiled gently and said, "Do not be afraid, Nila. I was under a spell cast by a forest witch. She said only someone who gives without expecting anything in return could break my curse. I begged many people for help, even the people in your house, but they were all selfish. You helped me simply because you are kind. Your selfless act has freed me."
The Prince took Nila on his magnificent horse and led her to a grand palace hidden behind the mountains. When they entered the golden halls, Nila was shocked to see Mrs. Devi and Maya. They were not masters anymore; they were servants in the palace, punished by the King for their cruelty to others. Nila felt a pang of sadness for them. Instead of seeking revenge, she turned to the Prince and said, "Please, Your Highness, do not punish them further. Let them return to their homes."
The people of the kingdom were deeply moved by Nila's compassion. They realized that a true leader is defined by their heart. The King and the people declared Nila the new Princess of the kingdom. Nila, who once had nothing, now lived a life of respect and joy, always remembering that kindness is the greatest treasure.
