Once, in a peaceful village, lived a man named Ravi who had no job and no sense of responsibility. Instead of working, he spent his days stealing small items from neighbors to buy food. He lived a lazy life, thinking he was quite clever.

However, things changed when the King heard about the rising thefts and sent a brilliant Commander to restore order. The Commander placed guards at every corner of the village. Suddenly, Ravi found it impossible to steal anything without being caught. Fearing the consequences, Ravi decided to make one final, massive theft and flee the area forever.

Under the cover of night, Ravi stole precious gold ornaments and silver vessels from the local temple. To avoid suspicion while traveling, he disguised himself as an old, wise monk by attaching a fake beard and mustache to his face. Exhausted from his flight, he reached a distant village and fell asleep under a massive banyan tree.

When the sun rose, the villagers saw the 'monk' resting under the tree. Assuming he was a holy man, they gathered around him to seek blessings. Ravi, seeing the respect and the food being offered, had a sudden idea. 'Why struggle as a thief when I can live as a saint?' he thought. He decided to continue his disguise, accepting gifts and food from the villagers, and eventually built a small hut near the tree.

Meanwhile, the Commander was still searching for the thief. He noticed that thefts had stopped, which meant the thief had likely fled. But his spies reported that a new monk had appeared in a nearby village and was receiving great attention. The Commander realized this might be his man.

Knowing that the villagers deeply respected this monk, the Commander decided not to arrest him directly, as it might cause a riot. Instead, he devised a clever plan. He dressed his soldiers as simple travelers and entered the village.

One day, the Commander approached Ravi in front of the crowd. 'Oh, Holy One!' he exclaimed loudly. 'I came to tell everyone how you miraculously returned my lost golden bowl through your divine powers last month!' The villagers were amazed, whispering about the monk's greatness.

Seeing the crowd's excitement, another soldier, disguised as a devotee, stepped forward. 'Great Monk, our village temple has lost its sacred golden lamp. Could you please use your magic to find it?'

Panic surged through Ravi. He knew the lamp was hidden in his belongings. 'If I don't find it, they will realize I am a fraud!' he thought. Driven by fear, he hurried into his hut and emerged a few moments later, holding the stolen golden lamp. 'Behold! Your lamp has returned!' he proclaimed, pretending to have performed a miracle.

The villagers cheered, but the Commander’s soldier, who was an expert, examined the lamp closely. 'This is indeed the stolen lamp!' he announced.

As Ravi bowed to accept their praise, the Commander stepped forward and grabbed the fake beard. With one swift tug, the beard came off in his hand! The illusion was shattered. The villagers were shocked to see the 'holy man' was actually the thief they had been looking for.

As the soldiers apprehended Ravi, the Commander addressed the crowd. 'Do not let outward appearances deceive you. True wisdom comes from character, not from a costume.' The villagers hung their heads in shame, realizing they had been fooled by a dishonest man.
