In a prosperous kingdom, a wise teacher named Vikram was working hard to build a grand school for children. To fund this noble cause, he visited many wealthy merchants. One afternoon, he went to see Lord Vardhan, the richest and most arrogant merchant in the land.
Vikram explained how the school would change lives. However, Lord Vardhan felt insulted that a commoner was asking for his gold. "Do you think my wealth is a charity for your little project?" Vardhan roared. In a fit of rage, he snatched his silk scarf from his neck and threw it at Vikram's feet. "Take this worthless scrap and leave my sight!" he commanded.
Vikram did not react with anger. He calmly picked up the silk scarf, folded it neatly, and walked out of the palace. Lord Vardhan watched him go, feeling a strange sense of confusion at the teacher's composure.
Vikram headed straight to the busiest marketplace in the city. He stood on a wooden crate and announced loudly, "Citizens! Look at this magnificent silk! This is the very scarf worn by the great Lord Vardhan himself! Who among you wishes to own a piece of his glory? Let the bidding begin!"
The crowd gathered quickly, intrigued by the mention of the famous merchant. Word reached Lord Vardhan through a messenger. He turned pale with fear. "If someone buys that scarf for a tiny amount, my reputation will be ruined! Everyone will say I am a man who throws away his dignity!" he cried.
Panicked, Vardhan ordered his assistant, "Go at once! Buy that scarf at any cost! Do not let it go for a low price!"
The assistant rushed to the market and placed a massive bid, winning the scarf for a sum far greater than its actual value. Vikram smiled gently as he received the gold coins, which he immediately placed into the school's fund. Lord Vardhan realized that his anger had not only cost him money but had also been outsmarted by the very calmness he tried to insult.
