In a bustling town lived a merchant named Silas. While Silas was wealthy, his heart was filled with greed. He never thought of sharing and always looked for ways to gain more by tricking others.

One bright morning, Silas prepared a leather pouch filled with fifty gold coins for his journey to the market. However, while walking through a forest path, the pouch slipped from his belt and fell into the tall grass. Silas did not realize it was gone until he reached the market. He was devastated.

Silas and his sons searched every inch of the path for two days, but the gold was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, a young girl named Maya, who was gathering firewood nearby, spotted something shiny near a bush. She picked it up and discovered it was a pouch full of gold coins.

Maya immediately took the pouch to her father, a humble laborer. He recognized the pouch and decided to return it to Silas. They walked to Silas's house and presented it to him. "Sir, your lost pouch has been found!" her father said with a smile.

Instead of being grateful, Silas's eyes gleamed with greed. He opened the pouch, counted the coins, and shouted, "This is not my pouch! There were seventy coins in mine! You are trying to cheat me!"

Maya and her father were heartbroken. They had acted with pure honesty, yet they were being accused of theft. The matter was taken to the Village Judge.

The Judge listened carefully to both sides. He asked Silas, "How many coins were in your pouch?" Silas replied, "Seventy coins, your honor!"

The Judge then turned to Maya and asked, "And how many were in the pouch you found?" Maya replied softly, "Fifty coins, sir."

The Judge smiled and delivered his verdict. "If Silas's pouch truly had seventy coins, then this pouch with only fifty coins cannot be his. Therefore, this gold belongs to the honest girl who found it!"

Silas realized too late that his greed had cost him everything. Maya and her family were rewarded for their integrity, while Silas was left with nothing but his lies.
