In a small village, a young man named Kari lived with his elderly mother. One year, a severe drought hit the village, and they found themselves with almost no food. Kari felt helpless and worried. His friend, Somu, suggested a shortcut, 'Why struggle, Kari? Just go to the city, hold out a bowl, and ask for coins. It’s much faster than working in the fields.'
Kari hesitated. Seeing his mother's tired eyes, the temptation to take the easy way out was strong. But then he thought, 'If I beg, I might fill my stomach today, but I will lose my self-respect and my mother's honor forever.' He decided to work instead. He went to a nearby large farm and offered to do any hard labor. He spent long hours digging soil and tending to plants under the hot sun. The farm owner, impressed by his dedication, began paying him a fair daily wage.
Slowly, through his sweat and hard work, Kari was able to buy enough grain for his mother. He realized that while begging might solve a temporary hunger, it is a foolish way to escape the hardships of poverty. True dignity comes from the hands that work.
