In a vast, emerald forest, a large troop of monkeys lived together. One particular winter night, a biting chill swept through the trees, making every monkey shiver uncontrollably.
"This cold is unbearable!" sighed an elder monkey, hugging himself. "If only we could find a fire to keep us warm."
Just then, a tiny firefly drifted through the dark leaves, its abdomen glowing with a soft, golden light. To the shivering monkeys, this tiny speck of light looked exactly like a dancing flame. "Look! A spark of fire is coming to save us!" shouted a young monkey excitedly.
Driven by the need for warmth, the monkeys began to chase the light. "Quick! Don't let it go out!" commanded another. They tried to trap the firefly under small twigs and dry leaves, thinking that by 'feeding' it more material, the fire would grow larger and brighter.
They worked frantically, huddling around the tiny insect, trying to fan the light and keep it trapped under piles of wood. But the more they tried to make it 'burn,' the more the tiny light flickered and struggled to stay alive. It wasn't growing; it was fading.
A wise owl, watching from a high branch, finally flew down. "Stop this madness at once!" the owl hooted loudly.
"Why?" the monkeys cried out in confusion. "Why won't the fire grow?"
"Because it is not a fire!" the owl explained gently. "It is a tiny firefly. You are trying to treat a living creature like a pile of wood. You cannot create warmth from a single spark of life." The monkeys realized their foolishness. They felt ashamed for mistaking a tiny insect for a great fire and for bothering the little creature. They quietly let the firefly fly away into the night.
Moral
Do not mistake an illusion for reality; acting without understanding leads to foolishness.
