Deep within a lush forest stood a massive, ancient banyan tree. In a hollow of this tree lived a wise and calm owl. One sunny afternoon, the owl was enjoying a peaceful nap inside its cozy home.
Suddenly, a loud, energetic grasshopper arrived. It began jumping around and making noisy 'kik-kik' sounds right next to the owl's hollow. The noise was so piercing that the owl could no longer sleep. The owl opened its eyes gently and said, "Dear friend, I am very tired and need some rest. Could you please be a little quieter?"
Instead of being polite, the grasshopper became angry. "Why should I be quiet? Do you think you own this whole tree?" it shouted arrogantly.
The owl realized that arguing would only lead to more noise. So, it decided to use a different approach. "Oh, my goodness!" the owl exclaimed with a smile. "I didn't realize how beautiful your voice was. Your singing sounds like the finest music in the forest!"
The grasshopper, feeling very important, puffed out its chest. "You really think so?" it asked. "Yes, it is truly wonderful. I shall stay here and listen to your melody all day," the owl replied.
Flattered by the praise, the grasshopper stayed right there, singing loudly and proudly all through the afternoon. However, as the sun set and darkness covered the forest, things changed. The grasshopper, being a creature of the light, could not see anything in the dark and began to stumble blindly.
The owl, however, was a master of the night. With its sharp eyes, it saw the grasshopper clearly. In the shadows, the owl made its move and caught the clumsy grasshopper.
As the grasshopper lay defeated, it finally understood. The owl's sweet words were not true kindness, but a clever way to keep the grasshopper in place until nightfall. The praise had been a trap.
Moral
Do not be blinded by flattery; false praise can lead to great danger.
