In a peaceful valley nestled between green hills, there lived a community of people who shared everything they had. No one went hungry, and no one felt lonely. One sunny afternoon, an old traveler was walking through this valley.
As he walked along a dusty path, something caught his eye. Tucked between two stones was a single, shining gold coin. The traveler was a man of simple needs and had no use for wealth, but he thought, "This coin should go to someone who truly needs it."
He entered the village to find a worthy recipient. He saw farmers resting after a good harvest, mothers singing to their babies, and neighbors laughing together. Everyone seemed content with what they had. He couldn't find anyone struggling or in need of help.
Suddenly, the peaceful silence was broken by the heavy thumping of horses and the clanking of metal. The King of the valley was riding past with a massive army. The traveler stepped forward and asked, "Great King, why are you rushing so urgently?"
The King, looking stern and ambitious, replied, "I am marching to conquer the neighboring kingdom. Once I take their gold and lands, I will finally be truly wealthy!"
The traveler smiled gently and held out the gold coin to the King. The King looked confused. "What is this for?" he demanded.
"I searched this entire valley for someone in need," the traveler said calmly. "But everyone here is happy and satisfied. Only you are restless. You seek to take from others because you feel you do not have enough. Even with a kingdom, your greed makes you the poorest person I have met today."
The King stopped in his tracks. The words pierced his heart. He realized that his endless desire for more was a hunger that could never be filled. He ordered his army to return home and decided to spend his days ensuring his people remained happy and satisfied.
Moral
Contentment is the greatest wealth; greed makes even a king a beggar.
