In a small village nestled near a lush green forest lived a woodcutter named Samuel. Samuel was known throughout the village not just for his hard work, but for his unwavering honesty. He lived a simple life, earning enough to support his family through the wood he gathered.

One bright morning, Samuel went deep into the forest to find wood near a rushing river. As he was working on a sturdy branch of a large tree, his old iron axe slipped from his sweaty hands and splashed into the deep, swirling water. Samuel felt a heavy knot in his stomach. That axe was his only way to earn a living, and the river was too fast and deep for him to swim in.

As he sat by the riverbank, feeling hopeless, a gentle light emerged from the water. A beautiful Forest Spirit appeared before him. 'Why are you weeping, kind woodcutter?' she asked softly. Samuel explained his misfortune. The Spirit smiled and said, 'Do not fear, I will find your axe for you.'

She dived into the river and emerged moments later, holding a magnificent axe made of pure gold. 'Is this yours?' she asked. Samuel looked at the shining object but shook his head. 'No, Spirit. That is beautiful, but it is not mine. I cannot take what does not belong to me,' he replied.

The Spirit dived again and returned with a gleaming silver axe. 'Then surely this silver one is yours?' she inquired. Again, Samuel replied with a calm voice, 'No, that is not mine either. I prefer my simple tool.'

For the third time, the Spirit disappeared into the depths. When she surfaced, she was holding Samuel’s old, worn-out iron axe. Samuel’s eyes lit up with joy. 'Yes! That is it! That is my axe!' he cried happily.

The Forest Spirit was deeply moved by his integrity. 'Samuel, your heart is as pure as the forest itself. Because you chose truth over greed, I wish to reward you.' She handed him the gold axe, the silver axe, and his own iron axe. Samuel thanked her profusely and returned home, his life forever changed by his honesty.
