Long ago, in a lush green forest, there lived a group of hedgehogs. Unlike the hedgehogs we see today, they were incredibly beautiful. Their bodies were covered in soft, shimmering fur that felt like silk, and they had no spines at all.
Because of their stunning appearance, the hedgehogs grew very proud. They would walk through the forest with their heads held high, often mocking the other animals. 'Look at us!' they would boast. 'We are the most graceful and lovely creatures in this entire forest!' This vanity made them act quite unkindly toward their neighbors.
However, their beauty soon became their greatest curse. In the wild, being beautiful often means being noticed. Predators like foxes and wild cats were constantly drawn to the hedgehogs' soft, easy-to-catch bodies. Because they had no way to defend themselves, the hedgehogs were always running in fear, unable to find a safe place to rest.
One evening, after a narrow escape from a hungry fox, the hedgehogs met a wise old tortoise who lived near the Great River. 'Wise one,' they pleaded, 'we are tired of living in fear. We are beautiful, yes, but our beauty makes us targets. Please, help us find a way to stay safe!'
The tortoise looked at them thoughtfully. 'Safety is a gift, but it comes with a cost. Are you willing to give up the very thing you prize most—your beautiful, soft fur—to gain protection?'
The hedgehogs looked at one another. They saw the fear in each other's eyes and thought of the many times they had almost been caught. 'Yes!' they cried out together. 'We don't care about being beautiful anymore. We just want to be safe!'
As soon as they made this selfless choice, a transformation began. The soft, silky fur started to harden and sharpen. Slowly, tiny, needle-like spines grew all over their bodies. Within a few days, they were no longer the softest animals in the forest, but they were certainly the most well-protected.
When a predator tried to approach a hedgehog again, it found it impossible. As soon as it tried to take a bite, the sharp spines would prick its nose. The predator would quickly give up and run away. The hedgehogs had lost their vanity, but they had gained something much more valuable: peace of mind and a safe home.
Moral
It is better to be safe and sturdy than beautiful and vulnerable.
